In 1546, when Sofonisba was around fourteen years old, she was sent to live with Bernardino Campi, a respected local painter. It was common for young apprentices to board with artists at the time to study their craft full time. The son of a goldsmith, Bernardino Campi began his artistic training in his native Cremona. Period sources indicate that he was an active portraitist in the major capitals of northern Italy, but few of these likenesses survive and almost none of their sitters have been identified with any certainty.
Bernadino Campi (1522-1591) was a Renaissance painter from Cremona, who worked in Reggio Emilia. He is known as one of the teachers of Sofonisba Anguissola and of Giovanni Battista Trotti (il Malosso). In Cremona, his extended family owned the main artistic studios.
